Support for Preceptors

USciences preceptors are always welcome to use the J. W. England Library. For night and weekend access, please contact us via Ask A Librarian and tell us when you plan to visit. See our homepage for hours.

We'll be glad to answer quick questions, such as foreign drug IDs, or locate a reference for you. Reference assistance is available without an appointment during the semester from 10:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with extended hours until 6:00pm on Monday and Wednesday (call 215-596-8967 to check availability). You can also visit Ask A Librarian to submit your question online or browse our knowledge base of past answers.

Library Journals and Databases

The Library does not own our electronic resources but leases them under strict contractual agreements that restrict their use to current faculty, staff, students, and walk-in patrons. Therefore, we cannot give preceptors remote access to them. However, if you visit the library you can access our electronic resources and print collection. (Due to licensing agreements, some e-resources cannot be accessed by walk-in patrons).

Journal Articles

The USciences Library will provide a limited number of journal articles to you from its print journal collection. Contact the Interlibrary Loan Office.

Some online articles are available free; here are two sources to check:

  • PubMed Central (PMC) - Archive of free journal articles from the National Library of Medicine.
  • Free Medical Journals - Many medical journals make part or all of their content freely available online. Check here for links to them.

Free Databases and Other Resources

  • PubMed - Search Medline, using PubMed's many features, including the ability to link to free medical journals online. The tutorials are excellent.
  • National Guideline Clearinghouse - Clinical practice guidelines from many sources.
  • The Cochrane Library - Highly respected international systematic reviews on recommended therapies. Only abstracts are available without a subscription.
  • MedlinePlus - Includes consumer drug information and other health resources.
  • RXList - This free site from the WebMD network offers detailed information about brand name and generic pharmaceuticals.
